Compound Parabolic Concentrator

Compound Parabolic Concentrator

Compound Parabolic Concentrator
The compound parabolic reflector is constructed by using segments of two parabolas. These parabolas are arranged in such a way that the focus of both coincides at same line. Because of the Specific shape of the surface, all the incoming rays are reflected and concentrated on absorber/ receiver tube. The receiver tube is placed on the focal band. The fluid inside is heated up due to concentrating solar irradiation thus received by the surface of the tube. Receiving concentrated radiation on small area helps achieve higher temperature faster. How does CPC work?
- On an Average earth receive 5 to 6 Kwh/m2 . And on an average received in India ie 5.5Kwh/m2
- Following table indicates Water & Energy delivered, based on insolation & target temperature
Technology | Target Temperature | Efficiency | Energy deliver (kw) | Water Quantity (Lh/m2) |
---|---|---|---|---|
ETC Tube | 50 | 50% | 2.5 | 86 |

How to install?
CPC system installation could be done in two ways.
- 1) CPC (N/S orientation): This set up includes CPC collectors with ETC tube at center of each collector of 1700 X 150 mm each in North-South and the manifold in East-West direction
- 2) CPC (E/W orientation): This set up includes CPC collectors with ETC tube at center of each collector of 1700 X 140 mm each in East-West direction the manifold in North-South direction.
The choice of orientation of CPC collectors will depend on the latitude of the location.
The Orientation of the CPC and manifold will depend on the latitude of the site. For any site having latitude between 25o S to 25o N, the manifold should be oriented lengthwise north south and the CPC should be oriented lengthwise east west.
For sites having larger latitudes than these means more than S25 and N25, the manifold should be oriented lengthwise east west and the CPC should be oriented lengthwise north south. For these sites the system needs to have a tilt of 30 o to 45o facing the other hemisphere of earth. If the site is in the northern hemisphere the collector should be facing south and vice a versa. For achieving the tilt manifold stand is elevated by calculated height.

What are the Advantages & Disadvantages of the system?
Advantages:
- Solar being free resource thus helps in saving Fuel/electricity costs.
- Onetime investment and after that its free for up-to 20 years.
- It is a renewable and clean energy source so it reduces over carbon foot print.
- ROI in 5 years
- Accelerated Depreciation Benefit.
Limitation:
- Initial Capital Expenditure however zero OPEX Cost.
- Require huge installation area.
- Working of solar heaters depends up on abundance and availability of direct sun light.
- It heats only in day time, however if the storage tank is well insulated, heated water can be stored and used even at night.
- It will not be very helpful in rainy season or foggy days

How much CPC would I require & what is the Total Foot Print of the system?
The total solar installation area is calculated on the basis of total daily energy requirement and total insolation in that particular area.
Total solar foot print is 1.5 to 2 times of solar aperture area, as we have to consider space for piping and space for provision of cleaning.
Example
- 10,000L of water at 60-degree c would require approx. 140Sqmt of Solar installation & total solar foot print of approx. 210m²
- 10,000L of water at 80-degree c would require approx. 305Sqmt of Solar installation & total solar foot print of approx. 460m²
What is the ROI of the system?
Ideal Condition for best ROI
- High Fuel cost.
- High power tariff
- Availability of good solar Insolation
- Low target temperature
With above condition we will be able to offer ROI anywhere between 3 to 5 years
